About Larry Silver

Larry Silver was like a lot of other guys in the baby boomer generation. He served his country in the Navy during the Vietnam War. After returning to the US in 1971, he moved to Colorado. He attended the University of Colorado. He started his own business in 1977, and moved to Westminster where he married his wife, Becky. They had 2 sons, Jeff and Ben. The boys grew, the business grew. Larry was always involved in his community. He was a youth soccer coach, a founding member of the Westminster Optimist Club, and the Cub Master for his son’s Cub Scout Pack. He almost never missed one of his son’s games, especially when they played basketball for their high school. Larry absolutely loved to play golf! The boys went off to college. Larry and Becky had a chance to travel and Larry was able to take more time off from his now thriving business to play golf. That is where the story ends. In November of 2004, Larry was diagnosed with leukemia (AML). After 9 months of treatment, including 3 months in Seattle for a stem cell transplant, he passed away on August 24, 2005.

Almost everyone has been touched by cancer in some way. When you lose a loved one you struggle to make sense of what happened and how to honor their memory. In 2006, Larry’s best friend, Bruce Vezina, established the Larry Silver Memorial Golf Tournament to honor Larry’s memory and to raise money to help families with children undergoing cancer treatment. When Larry was in Seattle at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance for his stem cell transplant, he saw so many children there going through the same thing he was. Knowing how horrible the treatment was for him, it saddened him so to see these little ones and their families suffering so much. We know that this is what Larry would want us to do in his memory. This tournament can also be a chance for others to play in honor of someone they know who has been touched by cancer.
